Personal Projects

A very basic overview of personal projects

Basic steps

  1. Pitch idea to Obe.

    • This can be anything from a still life where you take the photo yourself to something more challenging like a portrait.

    • We'll discuss how you'll execute it if it's something that might be out of your current skillset.

  2. Create/get image.

    • This will vary drastically depending on what you're doing. It might be taking a photo in class of objects. (Bear in mind this will take some prep time). It can be getting a friend to pose for a portrait. It can also be using/mixing reference that you've found/bought online. It can also be setting up a longer term still life in class.

  3. Image picking

    • At this stage you'll often have a pile of photos that you've taken. You need to pick which one(s) stand out to you.

  4. Photo Editing/prints.

    • If you are comfortable with photo editing, you will edit your image to work for what you want. If not, Obe can help here. Don't leave this to the last minute. A lack of planning on your part will not make Obe rush for you :)

    • Print your photo. Get a good quality print done, ideally at the same size that you are working at. Do an additional print if you are tracing on cheap paper.

  5. Prep canvas.

    • This can be as simple as drawing/tracing, but you may also want to edit your canvas to be smoother or toned. Chat to Obe if this is the case.

    • If you are editing your canvas, add 1-2 weeks before you are painting

  6. Painting time

    • I shouldn't need to explain what to do here ;)

  7. Dry time.

    • This should be an absolute minimum of 1 month. The ideal is 6 months, but that's a conversation to have with Obe if you haven't already.

  8. Varnish

    • Your painting will need to be varnished before it is framed. Chat to Obe if you need help here.

  9. Framing

    • Your painting will need to be framed. I highly recommend the store across the road. Allow a few weeks for this to be done.

  10. Naming, pricing etc

    • Let Obe know the following:

      • Name of Painting

      • Price if it's for sale (or let me know that it isn't)
