Mentorship

An answer to the lack of good university courses for painting.

What it is:

A term of study for those who want to push themselves further. This is geared more towards people who want to be professional artists (or simply create at a professional level).

The content will be more customised. I consider this to be a part way between a university course and seeing a specialist (In the way that you would see a physiotherapist, psychologist etc).

Ideally, 3 of these will run per year (12 weeks each).

This is my way of making some more in depth content that is also far more targeted to individual goals.

How it will run:

During the allocated term, you’ll meet with me once per week to work towards a goal that you are working towards.

This goal will be unique to where you are at and wanting to work on. Ideas could include but not limited to: Portrait study, speed running the current coursework, Developing a series of paintings for sale/establishing a practice that works for you, draftsmanship (constructive drawing).

The meetings will be 1 hour each week via Zoom (or whichever online platform). This enables me to have way more resources at hand, and means that the timing for these can be a lot more flexible. If I need to be in studio for each person, I’ll need to set specific times that must work for everyone which breaks very quickly.

You’ll also still have access to your regular classes (In fact, you get unlimited for this period!). This is when we’ll tackle anything technical that can’t be communicated via Zoom.

Given that you’ll be working without supervision for a lot of the exercises: I’ll be teaching lessons about how to create a practice that works for your own study.

The expectation is that you’d be doing at least 10 hours of your own study in addition to class time and the meeting. So effectively 14 hours of art as a minimum per week. Ideally this should be a bit closer to 20 hours.

As part of this, I am offering 24/7 access to the studio for the duration of the term. I encourage people to work from home as it provides a nice relaxation, but having a dedicated space can also be incredibly useful. You can spend time with other artists without the timeframe of regular class. You’ll have additional easy storage for larger artworks and lighting that works for larger pieces.

What to expect:

We’ll discuss a goal/topic to be tackled. I’ll set you up with exercises that work towards this goal.

We’ll also work towards a polished piece (or a couple if preferred) that can act as a capstone for the term.

Each week we can review what is and isn’t working. Set up new exercises or adjust present ones to work better. Feedback will also be provided towards your polished piece(s).

You’ve all seen what can be accomplished with one class per week, or in an intensive. Think of what you could be making after 12 weeks of customised study.

Fees:

The price per 12 week term will be: $4,100.

This is inclusive of:

  • Weekly 1 on 1 sessions

  • Unlimited classes

  • 24/7 Space access

  • Customised instruction

  •
